BEST. FILM. EVER. I saw it in the theatre seven times and probably have re-watched 50+. The background to its production is fascinating as well! And according to the director, nobody but Mr. Fraser was ever considered for the role of Rick. Bravo :)
I've always loved train travel. When I was a student in Baltimore, I used to take the Northeast Corridor trains to NY and Boston, even though that Boston trip was slow, and almost always delayed. I have taken two extended trips to Europe, and my travel was mostly by train.
I have been hoping to ride a true high speed train in the US before I die. I've been on the Acela, NY to DC, and it's not fast enough :-)
I just looked around the web site of the California High Speed Rail Authority. Almost 60 miles of "guideway" constructed so far, and lots of projects under way. Lots of Fed funding via ARRA...which of course the GOP wants to gut. Fuck those idiots.
But I'm not getting any younger, California guys. Push harder!
The High Speed Rail, by going through the Central Valley, will never be as scenic as the Coast Starlight and its not fast enough to make up the difference. Now if it were MagLev, we'd be talking about a fun train.
I wouldn't hold your breath on riding it any time soon. It's not a good sign when they have 'CEO' on their open jobs web page.
Some black Republican strategist is on CNN whining that BIDEN doesn't have a plan for closing the wealth gap for black Americans. LOL...TRUMP is going to do something about wealth inequality...much LESS BLACK wealth inequality??????? Good gravy! I always wonder "do these people actually believe the shit they say, or do they have such a love for money that they will say whatever they get paid to say"?
Has the idiot actually read ANY of the plans that Biden has for ANYTHING? Idiot probably believes and is a greedy cynical opportunist at the same time.
Every Republican on EVERY show mentions "the high price of gas." I'm not sure if anyone remembers what the price of gas was under Trump, but it was exactly the same as it is now, except when it was $1.50 a gallon during Covid.
Instead of pushing back on that lie, the media spends every minute focusing on the war in Gaza. The reality is that the majority of American voters don't care about Gaza, and if they do, it's way down on their list. The majority of Americans don't give a shit that Russia invaded Ukraine for NO reason, and may kick off WWIII if Russia overtakes Ukraine, and then starts swallowing up the rest of Eastern Europe.
The media also keeps saying "inflation is still high" without pointing out that it has dropped from about 9% to around 3.5%. While high still lower than economic growth and wage increases. Plus evidence part of that 3.5% is price gouging by corporations. Because they do not give numbers, people just start assuming it's still just as bad as it was in 2021. I bet if you ask any MAGA they will insist it's 10% a year, which it is not. Unless you are in the GOP North Carolina legislature, which has refused to give any permanent cost of living raises for state and teacher retirees in eight years. Meaning right now my state retirement check is the same as it was eight years ago. Raises for state employees have also seriously lagged inflation. So when it comes to compensating employees and retirees, inflation is at historic lows. But too many of those employees and retirees keep voting for Republicans. In fact the people griping most about no raises and low pay when I worked for the state were the ones voting for Republicans.
OMG, your post totally hit a nerve with me. I have a neighbor who is a Fox News watching moron, and former Rush Limbaugh listener. He retired from his SC state worker's job about 14 years ago, when he was 62. He was living for 10 years off of his SS and state worker's pension. Luckily for him he married a woman who has paid off her mortgage, so he gets to live in her house while only paying for the utilities, and it's a small house. He FINALLY paid off a small mobile home park he owns last year, so he'll be getting an extra $2000 a month from that.
Back during the Great Recession, he told me he was going to stop paying his union dues because "teachers in Wisconsin are making $150K a year." I said "you think with unemployment being 12%, that everyone in the country wouldn't be moving to WI if that was true"? I also added "I hope more of your fellow state union workers stop paying their dues, because I'll be THRILLED when your union goes away, and I won't have to "redistribute" my wealth to you, and you should be glad about that because you HATE wealth redistribution and taxes. I know I hate paying taxes to send my money to union workers, and we both HATE union workers, right? Furthermore, Paul Ryan is working on gutting Social Security, and that's one of the few good ideas Republicans have ever had. We need to get rid of SS RIGHT NOW, so that we can pay for all of those tax cuts on billionaires, because I KNOW you hate how high our national debt is, and the 3 biggest causes of the debt are the military, SS, and Medicare. We both KNOW that the military can never be cut, so let's get rid of SS and Medicare. Let's also get rid of Section 8 vouchers, too, so that we can get rid of more moochers." He's basically semi comfortable financially due to the policies of Democrats - SS, Medicare, and Section 8 housing that his mobile home park dwellers all use. He walked off muttering "maybe we could raise taxes on billionaires a little bit." Republicans HATE "socialism" unless it's THEIR "socialism."
He spends a TON of money on merchandise from Mike Lindell, and every other right wing grifter, even though he's "economically anxious." He's rabidly anti-union despite benefitting from one. The only thing that hit home with him was when I started AGREEING with him that we needed to cut all government "handouts." I also pointed out that when Mitt Romney was talking about 43% of the American public being moochers, he was talking about HIM.
I have another idiot Republican friend who is living off of her SS check, and state worker's retirement fund. She's a rabid Trump humper, just like he is.
World's Best Fiancé Meccalopolis and I must get ourselves back to the city. We have The Shul Band concert at the Orensanz this afternoon and Furiosa early evening. Good day, beloved Wonketteers. I love and appreciate you all and I bless us all with love, health, peace, and grace.
Please, please stay safe. Wear a mask or two, wash your hands, sanitize when you cannot wash and let the sanitizer dry completely, stop touching your face, take Vitamin D, get a booster shot, avoid indoor and crowded outdoor gatherings and when you must meet, remove masks only to eat, drink, and take quick photos, and stay the fuck away from me and everyone with whom you do not share a roof. Do this because you love yourself, and because I love you, too. Do this in memory of dear departed Treg and Holly's hero pilot friend Tony (wish I could have met him) among over seven million dead worldwide. Do this to honor the nurses and other frontline medical personnel, especially ICU Hera Mrs Land Shark RN. Stay safe.
Oh no! Itchy Boots crashed and has to end Season 7. This season she started in Morocco, wound her way down the coast to Western Africa - holy fuck the mud - and then over and around to the east coast, Madagascar, and now had to end it in Tanzania. I've watched Noraly since she went from Peru to Alaska last season. Her footage is mesmerizing, her attitude is amazing, and her stamina and skills are beyond admirable. I wonder where's she's going next.
I am a financial supporter of Itchy Boots. I adore this woman as she's one of the great followable adventurers of our time, IMO. She is as delightful as she is tough. As delightful and tough as they get.
I haven't watched this episode yet but I will do so today, after my motorbike ride, rain or shine.
Thank you, ZIGGYWIGGY, for another great review and analysis. You're the best at these as I often times enjoy your informative reviews as much or better than the films.
Tomorrow at 5pm I am starting the dental implants. It is exciting to finally get it started but thinking about what is going to be done is causing lots of anxiety. Because the idea of gum cutting and bone shaving, then a screw into that bone sounds horrifying. It is not clear to me if I will be given gas or just numbing shots. I really hope for the gas because I can imagine the sounds will be awful.
I came to this thread a little late. I have three implants, and while it may seem nasty, the experience is not as bad as a root canal. I had local anesthesia, which was the only part that hurt. No gas.
I was stressed out too...also, the night before I thought I would take a soothing bath (husband was out of town) and then...oh, and THEN the faucet in the tub broke so it just shot water out non-stop on "HOT". Without end. I spent about 2 hours flipping out before someone from the building could help. I then decided to just go to bed, and I did, and then my friend took me to the appointment.
I wore my pink silk dressy pajamas and everyone oohed and ahhed and then I have no other memory for about 12 hours. My friends got me home and into bed and honestly I had no pain.
The best part was that I'd had pain or discomfort I pretty much got used to for many years and it's still so wonderful that it's gone.
However it goes, I wish you the best. And I can say this: my mom had implants put in years ago, and they've been a real blessing for her. Whatever the day tomorrow holds for you, life in your future - chewing, smiling, gnashing, etc - will be worth it.
I have two implants and they give me the numbing shots. It really wasn't bad except for having to keep my mouth open forever for the first one. The second one they put a block in to help with that.
I actually had bone loss and that had to do a bone graft first and then once that took they did have to shave the bone a bit. The weirdest part was the pressure when they were screwing in the mount for the tooth.
I got an implant a couple of years ago and was fine with numbing only for the part of the procedure you're about to have. I can't say the same for the extraction that preceded it. That was agony. I discovered that the shots don't have any effect on infected tissue. I felt all of it.
I had that problem too(infection interfering with the numbing) and know that is agony.
I have dealt with so much pain when it comes to my mouth, not that I am used to it but I know what it is like! I think it's more about hearing the shaving of bone, (they have to flatten it) that seems really unnerving. And fuck I want gas!
I hope you get that gas. Fentanyl is also great. I had that for a colonoscopy recently. I was chatty through the entire procedure and didn't feel a thing.
Tell yourself that your pain will be managed, and this is taking you forward into an amazing future. Remember that picture you posted with all the teeth? That’s gonna be you from here on out. That’s so incredibly cool.
Can you take ear phones and music along to drowned out any sounds you don’t want to hear? be proactive. Manage the situation as best you can, and tap into your strength.
Did you not have an option of being put under like they do with extractions? I could have just had the numbing shots, but the oral surgeon said that since I was so anxious and would hear the bones and shit that he was just going to do the full anaesthesia.
They have not given me the option of gas through all of it. I had broken teeth removed, just the numbing shots that didn't work that well and they had to give me extra shots. I am going through a dental school and some of it is great(the work is being done, the student dentists are amazing), some is bad, dickhead dentist-teacher, no options like gas.
Basically I get what I get, the first part(extractions, dentures)was covered by Medicaid and the implants are covered by NYU when you start with their general dentistry program. Although I am now in the special surgery, dental implant section of the school and hoping this is the place where gas is used.
Some asshole put a big TV by the dumpster because they're too lazy to find out how and where to properly dispose of it. If you sent a drone to any landfill to get aerial shots, how many things like that do you think you would see? Lots. People are fucking lazy.
I think they should really require the manufacturers to deal with the end of the appliance’s life. It would alleviate the problem for buyers AND encourage companies to make things that last. Win-win.
Microwave ovens are the worst to try to dispose of when they are damaged. Just old, and you can find someone local who needs one.
I was livid over how many autoinjectors I have to dispose of in the trash for my migraine meds. The pharmacist suggested a coffee can (I don’t drink coffee, also they don’t fit in the new plastic kind of coffee can anyway). I don’t use liquid laundry detergent, and the mouth is too narrow for them when I get them from others. The sharps disposal places (police stations, village halls) listed on the websites are usually no longer actively collection. The meds collection boxes don’t take sharps. The mail in boxes you pay for don’t seem to exist any longer. I finally ordered a plastic bin which, when full, is supposedly ok to put in the trash. But seriously, if the manufacturer had to consider disposal for the end consumer, they would have to make the injectors smaller, or sell them with easy returns or a bin, rather than relying on a network of grant funded options whose dead links and discontinued services litter the internet.
My workplace has an electronics recycling bin and they’re cool with people bringing in stuff from home. Nothing crazy like a fridge, but microwaves, printers, computers, smaller TVs are fine.
Our party needs to learn that politicians our not our personal Jesus. They are not here to answer all of our prayers just because we vote for them. They don’t need to agree with us 100% of the time. They just need to keep things moving in our direction.
<< Two White House officials Reuters spoke to emphasized Biden’s support among young voters is not where it was in 2020 and said they worry the administration is not taking the drop seriously enough.
With over 35,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza since the war began in October, U.S. support for Israel’s government could weigh heavily on the Presidential election in November, they said.
“There is almost a level of defiance when it comes to some of the President’s closest advisers on this issue,” said a senior White House official with direct knowledge of the matter, who did not wish to be named. “They think the best approach is to simply steer clear and let it pass.” >>
I think a lot of progressives fall into that trap - "I'll sit this election out to show the corporate, sell out ,Dems how I think they're no different than Republicans." Also, too, "I'm unhappy that I didn't get X, so I'll let Trump win so everyone else can suffer as well." SMRT! That's how we ended up with an actual clown in the WH in 2016, and justices Gorsuch, Kegstand, and Phony Parrot on the Supreme Court.
Gee, you sure showed the rest of us! You really helped out all those poor women in red states who can't get an abortion now even if their lives depend on it.
We do this every election cycle. There’s always that ONE issue that seeks to divide the Democrats. Well, if I don’t get X then I’m going to let the guy who is diametrically opposed to everything I stand for win. That’ll teach those Dems to see thing MY way!
It's going to be especially bad if they let Trump win in 2024, and he develops Gaza into a coastal resort town with Putin's money. The Palestinians have it rough now, but it will be way worse when Trump is running the show in America.
I hope they can hold on to their smugness as Trump rounds up a few million people into fenced areas, and passes a national abortion ban, as the Supreme Court decides Trump is free to commit whatever crimes he wants now that he's POTUS again.
Well, this has all been very fun, but it's almost time for the final matches of the English Premier League. I shall glut myself upon a surfeit of football. hooray.
I had another verbal wrestling match with my Republican relative and am noticing a pattern. He eventually agrees with me, from everything from Social Security, taxes, to abortion, foreign policy, etc. But then he still votes Republican! The one thing he still disagrees with me about is Citizens United and the twisted idea that a corporation is a "person." I tell him a corporation is a legal creation, not a person, but he still insists they're "a bunch of people." Which is still not a person. So ridiculous. That Citizens United decision is the worst thing that ever happened to this country.
The only penalty corporations generally receive are financial penalties, and they often fall short of correcting the damage caused by the corporation. They cannot be sentenced to prison, forced to pick up the trash on the roadside, or usually be shut down. Except in extreme cases the executives are seldom held individually liable. Something made more difficult by Supreme Court decisions in cases like Enron, where the few execs found guilty of crimes in court were exonerated by a Supreme Court decision.
I really thought there was hope for one of my cousins because I KNOW what her values are and they do not align with that insanity (except the gun thing, on that she's intractable).
But same -- keeps doing the stupid thing. I finally had to give up.
There’s some tribalism to it. I’m a Republican, I have to vote Republican, even though that Republican I’m putting office is doing all these things that I oppose.
Yes, I think this is part of it. He's also a huge sports fan, with all of this loyalty to certain teams - something I find weird. One time he made a disparaging remark about Trump, but then quickly denied it - can't be disloyal!
Media observers immediately erupted in a cacophony of anxiety, foreboding and mockery. Bloomberg columnist Parmy Olson, in an op-ed titled, “Making ChatGPT ‘Sexy’ Might Not End Well for Humans,” warned that GPT’s new personality might cause “vulnerable people [to] develop an unhealthy attachment” to it, with “insidious effects on … mental health.”
Business Insider noted that GPT’s saucy persona was “giving some people the ick.” And The Daily Show got right to the heart of why the computer-generated coquette could be problematic, as senior correspondent Desi Lydic cracked that “ChatGPT is comin’ for your man,” while noting that the app’s “horny robot baby voice” was “clearly programmed to feed dude’s egos … she’s like, ‘I have all the information in the world, but I don’t know anything! Teach me, daddy!’”

I am so very happy for you. I'm getting a replacement denture so I don't have teeth missing at our wedding.
I wish you could go to my dental surgeon, he knocked me out to remove my wisdom teeth. He's so good, I didn't even have any pain afterwards.
I hope they put you totally under. Best of luck! Maybe bring some ear plugs?
Choose courage. All the worry in the world will not ameliorate tomorrow by a flicker.
Be proud of yourself for having gotten this far, and embrace the future.
I always choose courage, that's why it's getting done. I am just talking to my friends about it first!
However it goes, I wish you the best. And I can say this: my mom had implants put in years ago, and they've been a real blessing for her. Whatever the day tomorrow holds for you, life in your future - chewing, smiling, gnashing, etc - will be worth it.
Thanks Sister, I have high expectations for the future of my chewing!
I have two implants and they give me the numbing shots. It really wasn't bad except for having to keep my mouth open forever for the first one. The second one they put a block in to help with that.
Did they have to shave the bone?
I actually had bone loss and that had to do a bone graft first and then once that took they did have to shave the bone a bit. The weirdest part was the pressure when they were screwing in the mount for the tooth.
That is what I was thinking about, the screwing(LOL)
LOL!!! The vibration of the bone without feeling anything....ok I can't go on with this statement....🤣
LOL!!
I got an implant a couple of years ago and was fine with numbing only for the part of the procedure you're about to have. I can't say the same for the extraction that preceded it. That was agony. I discovered that the shots don't have any effect on infected tissue. I felt all of it.

Thank goodness that's finally going forward! 5 p.m. seems like an awfully strange time to start a dental procedure, but hey, I'm no Paul Gosar.
All the best to ya, zig!
IK,R? This dentist always gives me late appointments. I don't mind, I can eat food all day and not be hungry after the work.
As someone who has a veritable treasure of titanium hardware in his body from the spine, to the arm, to the face, I say: "don't worry, be happy".
Skateboarding shenanigans back when and motorbike addiction (and track time) tend to dovetail with titanium to keep me together.
It works.
Keep up the good work ZW!
Ugh, I'm so sorry. I hope it's relatively painless for you.
Ask for general then? Although you need to be sure your insurance will pay for that, because it's bastard expensive.
Basically I get what I get, the first part(extractions, dentures)was covered by Medicaid and the implants are covered by NYU when you start with their general dentistry program. Although I am now in the special surgery, dental implant section of the school and hoping this is the place where gas is used.
Can you take some edibles or something beforehand? XD
Oh yeah, I am going to be as high as possible!
GO ZIGGY!
And I hope you get the gas as well because they you will not care.
If it is that bad, I'm thinking you might well get that. If you get a choice, you know which choice!
Some asshole put a big TV by the dumpster because they're too lazy to find out how and where to properly dispose of it. If you sent a drone to any landfill to get aerial shots, how many things like that do you think you would see? Lots. People are fucking lazy.
Some fucking asshole put motorcycle tires in my bin enclosure. Thanks.
If I find out who it is they're getting my waste electronics and as many car batteries as I can find.
edit: and paint cans
"And shtooopitt!"
And entitled.
The dump charges $15/set you drop off. So, they're cheap, too.
Our country has a collection site, centrally located, that accepts electronics. No charge. I dropped about 7 old cellphones there a few months back.
I called a private electronics recycler after the Mini moved out and he came to our house and took everything away for free.
You can also take small electronics to any Best Buy location.
Most cities and counties have collection sites. As I said, they're lazy.
Phoenix has special days for neighborhoods to "Put out yer junk!" for it to be collected.
Give it away at this year's Secret Santa hoedown at work.
You can sit out an election but you can’t sit out the consequences of that decision.
If Trump wins and goes full fascist on America there is no “opt out” program.
It’s weird how some people will turn their noses up at the idea of “this guy is 80% of what we want” and let the guy that is ten steps backward win.
Hopefully they won’t do it again but I’m nervous.
I have no doubt that they will do it again. The sheer righteousness is apparent l,just like in 2016.
If the Deposed Despot somehow manages to usurp victory in November there will no longer be any semblance of democracy in America to "opt out" of.
That is a fact that cannot be underscored often enough. If America fucks up this November there is NO going back.
It's infuriating, isn't it?
It's going to be especially bad if they let Trump win in 2024, and he develops Gaza into a coastal resort town with Putin's money. The Palestinians have it rough now, but it will be way worse when Trump is running the show in America.
Well, there is an opt out program but it's rarely pretty.
The blindly self righteous don't care.
They will be led into the camps with their heads held high!
I shall glut myself upon a surfeit of football. hooray.
Always knew you were a hooligan.
Championship Sunday!
With City still facing 115 serious charges of financial shenanigans that could prove...problematic.
The Sacrament of Soccer Surfeit Strategery?
I had another verbal wrestling match with my Republican relative and am noticing a pattern. He eventually agrees with me, from everything from Social Security, taxes, to abortion, foreign policy, etc. But then he still votes Republican! The one thing he still disagrees with me about is Citizens United and the twisted idea that a corporation is a "person." I tell him a corporation is a legal creation, not a person, but he still insists they're "a bunch of people." Which is still not a person. So ridiculous. That Citizens United decision is the worst thing that ever happened to this country.
If corporations were really people the State of Texas would have executed one already.
But I guess it still works out when an individual signs something as a representative of their corporation so they don't get held liable as a person?
Throw one in jail and I'll admit it's a person.
If corporations are "people" and $$$ is "speech" I want to see one of these Rethugs grammatically diagram a few of their financial transactions.
Ask him if a labor union is also a person.
All those 'persons' don't make decisions about spending the corporations money though.
Sometimes I think that cognitive dissonance is something one can become addicted to.
trump was tested for that, just ask Boebert.
We are all being tested.
A corporation is a bunch of money. Not a person.
Wait until the Trade Federation gets its own delegation in the House of Representatives, and two Senators.
The Ferengi Acquistion Association can't be far behind.
The Corporation is not a bunch of people. It was created precisely to be separate from the people employed by it. He has it backwards.
Yeah an LLC is deliberately designed to shield people (say, the CEO) from personal liability.
Yeah, but no. I was raised Republican, and I'm registered as such - which is all part of a Nefarious Plan.
The latest version of ChatGPT is creepy — and appealing
https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/17/opinions/open-ai-chatgpt-4o-yang/index.html
Gross.
