From the beginning of WW II, Italian military performance had been poor, not least because of bad/insufficient planning and il Duce's assumption of personal command over all the military forces. But in 1943 this was reaching a critical point. Hitler had sent Gen. Rommel into North Africa, after the Italians had failed to make progress in taking Egypt and the Suez Canal. But Rommel had finally been stopped by the Allies, and in May they captured Tunisia, the last Axis stronghold in North Africa. Sicily had fallen to the Allies, too, who were now threatening an invasion of Italy from the South. The Italians were considering making a separate peace, abandoning the German alliance. Mussolini had become curiously passive and was suffering from illness. At one point, he had withdrawn for a couple of months, leaving the country and military leaderless. On July 19, Hitler and Mussolini met for a conference in northern Italy. Hitler wouldn't hear any talk of peace. The Duce never could stand up to Hitler when they met in person (also, he insisted on conducting talks in German, without an interpreter, although his German was far from perfect). Upon returning, Mussolini summoned the Grand Council of Fascism, which seldom met and had become a rubber stamp. But this time it was different. There was debate, and a call for a vote on a motion that a senior Fascist, Dino Grandi, had prepared. It called for no less than the dissolution of the Fascist government. Mussolini could perhaps have stood up against this, but he didn't have it in him, and he lost the vote Then he went to deliver the results to the King, who had up until now been an enthusiastic supporter of Fascism. Tomorrow is the end of the second week of school for us. And the biggest struggle for my pilot online school program (for alternative high school students) has been my colleagues. 80% of my students made the required Teams meetings, and I had a good conversation with all of them. About 90% of my students are working on their online classes. That's a better percentage than I've gotten in the classroom some days.
We're using an online platform that we've used in the classroom for years now. My colleagues are used to making changes, replacing things they don't like with things in the classroom. But that option obviously doesn't exist with the fully online students. I had to try to explain that again to a colleague today when I found some things had been removed from a class.
I don't want the online classes to be just a series of multiple-choice tests. I know online schooling can never be as good as in-person, but I want it to be the best it can be for these kids, and to be able to say that we provided real educational opportunities for our online students.
My colleague said something in that conversation that reminded we have fundamentally different approaches to this job. "They're never going to need that." Not in the "This stuff doesn't matter outside of school," way, in the "Our students are never going to need to know this because of the jobs they'll have," way.
I'm not in the business of deciding what my students will or won't need after high school. They'll figure that out.
Fuck that. School is about learning how to use your brain. Sure, maybe you won’t need to use the Pythagorean theorem tomorrow. But learning the Pythagorean theorem equips you to learn the other things that you’re going to need to succeed in life. If you don't mind my asking...what grade(s) does this system support? And why are those students online? Is it simply a matter of logistics, or is there something more...invidious at work? Like, say, trying to avoid ICE agents? (Just a guess.)
We're an alternative high school, so 10th to 12th but already missing enough credits to endanger graduation. The kids in the program right now range from serious anxiety issues, to working a full-time job and not being able to get to school regularly (thanks, poorly enforced labor laws), to no longer allowed in the building because of behavior issues, to just refuses to come to school and if we didn't let them work online, they would have gone somewhere else to do it.
In the distant past, having an elected and politicized judiciary must have seemed like just the ticket, but look at yourselves now. Another bit of American Exceptionalism we of the ROW are happy to have missed out on.
