What makes CJNG stand out, and made this so risky, is that the "cartel" is more a diversified criminal conglomerate. Narcotics is only one of several products (extortion is probably their most productive center, though they're also in the illegal mining, agriculture and forest product business, as well as old fashioned political bribery and human trafficking). And credit card and real estate scams. All of which requires money laundering and arms transfers from north of the border. The fallout among those under-bosses all fighting to preserve their own fiefdom and expand their control of the other factions is likely to lead to more violence in the short run,
BUT... coupled with the start made in the previous administration (the misunderstood "abrazos no balazos" formula -- providing the social and educational services, and job opportunities that make criminal enterprises a less viable option for the underemployed or under educated) and a restructuring of the security services (more attention given to intelligence and "following the money") the crime rate was dropping so one hopes any spike will be temporary while the under-bosses are vulnerable to threats both from the state and their peers.
