Instincts are fascinating. Even at barely a few months old, with no predatory surroundings or "training," that teeny tiny little kitten knows to use its rear claws to try and disembowel what it's attacking.

Nature: red in tooth and claw, scary as fuck, and endlessly amazing.

Mandatory time off!!! But not for me. Glad there won't be as many posts, as I will have my arm up a turkey. Once I finish the pie, the green beans, the Nana jello (it's actually great), the potato dressing, etc. At least the crystal, china and silver are ready to go. (Don't jump me, I bought all of it myself and I'm going to use it.) Now to clean the house!!! As they used to say in simpler times, Calgon, take me away!!! Yay, Thanksgiving!

So, we did Turkey day for Mrs. Thors family on Saturday. a ham, cupla turkey breasts, LOTS of casseroles, mashed taters and gravy, punkin pie, pecan pie, cherry cheesecake and nanner pudding. Here is what I learned.

Sister is invited. Sister invites family friend without checking with us first.

A different friend is invited. Different friend invites complete stranger without checking with us first.

Son is invited. Son tells us 2 hours before arriving of an unannounced guest.

what the ever loving fuck is WRONG with people?

anyhoo, there was plenty of food, complete stranger was a no-show and people ate and got the fuck out, so a successful day.

Tulsi Gabbard worries me to no end. Not only is she a Russian agent, she's quite likely also working for Narendra Modi's interests. She will have access to Five Eyes intelligence. Canada is one of those Five Eyes. As you may have heard, we don't have particularly good relations with Modi's government right now. It would be disastrous if Modi got his hands on sensitive Intel about us. I'm particularly concerned the safety of Sikh Canadian activists. Ugh.

I bought dried beans because I am making the black eyed peas for Thanksgiving. I went to the Indian grocery store to picked up a four pound bag of black eyed peas a four pound bag of chickpeas and a four pound bag of yellow split peas. I have a slow cooker and I intend to start the black eyed peas overnight on Wednesday so I can finish cooking them on Thursday morning. It cost me $17 for all the dried beans but we eat all of these beans, they are easy to start in the slow cooker overnight and I can always prep the beans in the slow cooker, cool them, then bag them out and freeze them for later use.

WHOA.

That is a SERIOUS LOAD of beans/peas, my friend. Many nutrition, very protein!!

Now I need to know what you flavor, or "season" them with. NEED.

Will there be spices? Pork and of what variety? Any greens or tomatoes? Alliums/alliae?

Spill. The. TEA.

p.s. am planning out a Jerk dinner, with chicken. Coconut rice and a variation of "Caribbean coleslaw" I'm designing. Walkerswood marinade will be customized with honey for a sweeter twist and used as a glaze. I'm not sure how else I may be tinkering.

Recommendations VERY welcome, if you travel in Jerk :-D

Another pot of Fucking Epic Chili Rojo, No Beans Don't Argue begun last night, to finish today after chilling & de-fat-i-fy-ing the base sauce. Wagyu-hybrid chuck roast removed & diced. Ground pork to be sauteed with finely diced leek & celery, drained & added after the de-fatting. Real damn 4 types of chilies to be prepared through pureé stage, diced fresh red peppers added, then fried a bit before adding to base sauce of Italian tomato pureé/beef demi-glace/diced onion/roasted garlic etc. Diced beef to be returned, the whole mess re-heated and seasoning corrected. There is many seasoning! Very cumin!! Excellent Penzey's oregano & thyme! Some salt of the French Sea!

THERE WILL BE NO DAMN CHOCOLATE nor COFFEE nor BOOZE, nor powdered chili in this sucker. And don't even BREATHE the word "cilantro" in my presence!!

[Oh, wait: new delivery of sweet and hot paprikas from Hungary means there IS going to be some powdered, but just a small percentage; also, I think allspice counts. Is pepper berry, so? That's EIGHT kinds of "chili", or peppers. PLUS will garnish with fresh snipped chives, will be *pretty* :-) Sort of? ]

*Organic, pre-cooked, red kidney beans are provided for those who require them, from little boxes not cans.

I was all smug at the beginning of November, thinking I’d get my car inspected “real soon”.

So now, we’re nearly at the end of the month and I haven’t gotten it done. We have someone coming over this afternoon to clear our basement of about half of the paper goods from Mrs Mild’s local Hadassah chapter. Mrs Mild is having some kind of issue where she gets lightheaded, so she can’t/shouldn’t help. So I have to wait until our friend leaves.

First-world problems, I know, but it just piles on the stress of the day/week/month/year/decade/century/millennium. On a brighter note, the visiting nurse came by again today. She is a very cheery young woman who is very interested in caring for Mrs Mild, asks good questions and is a delight to chat with.

Expand full comment

Good luck with all that stuff! Same boat with inspect/register/but prob repair first/ugh.

I have quite a history with the swooning and light-headedness; had a bit of it yesterday and started drinking more water, which I've recently learned can help alleviate my BP dropping. Also: had incipient ear infection diagnosed last summer and advised to take antihistamine (in addition to the antibiotic for it and another issue) which helps with additional dizzy spells.

I hope those things were also checked off. Sending Mrs well-wishes.

Expand full comment

Very interesting about the water intake lowering BP. Mrs Mild’s problem is very low BP, 110/60, or lower. When she was in the hospital last week her heartrate sometimes dropped to the 20s.

She’s also an ileostmate, and has no large intestine, which is where much of the bodies water is absorbed. So she tries to drink more water than “normal” to keep hydrated. Also, more salt, and other electrolytes, which is counter to what us old folks are supposed to do.

Thanks, right back at you.

No no no, mine is low, and if I neglect to drink enough it drops further!

Sending all the very strongest healing & sustaining vibes, Mild Household.

The state of Ohio gave each state employee a floating state holiday to be used for their birthdays. It was a mess. Management had to take that into account with scheduling, along with scheduling employees off when they birthday fell on a weekend, and the inevitable chaos when someone calls off sick.

Ohio Secretary of State Bob Taft, Jr. (a Republican!), said, "Why don't we all take our floating holiday on the day after Thanksgiving?"

Problem solved.

We're heading out of town tomorrow afternoon for T-day. It will be our first-ever long-distance trip in the EV, so I'm curious to see how it goes.
