During the height of the pandemic I had the same 'discussion' far too many times with locals over the phrase " My Body My Choice"

They really thought they had the ultimate 'gotcha' when they would yell that the statement applied to their refusal to wear a mask.

I grew so tired of explaining in simple fuckwit ways that my choice affected no one but me but theirs could kill people.

Yes. He's not fucking up badly enough, or being weird enough right now to garner attention

Here! Here! 👏🏻👏🏻Your right to swing your arm stops at the tip of my nose. MAHA’s credulous, stubborn, stupid, and dangerous dismissal of this basic tenet of public health should yield the inevitable result of them getting punched in the face. Every time. Figuratively, of course.

In other news, the state of Mississippi recently dramatically relaxed their vaccination rules, and recently a baby died of whooping cough, a totally preventable disease. First death from that in thirteen years - there will be more before the anti-vaxxers get locked back into their box again.

Having been a former religious person, I don't understand the objection to vaccinations -- didn't gawd give humans the gift of scientists? She gave brains to every human, including the girls, but there's no logic for failing to use the brains.

My previous primary care Dr was very religious and she told people this exact thing.

Sadly, it didn't extend to her thoughts about birth control. She did give women names of Dr's who did prescribe BC so I chose to respect her decision.

They’re already vaccinated by the blood of Jesus Christ…..duh.

It occurs to me: the generations that made Fox News a force were the silents and the boomers—people who had benefited, and lived long lives, because of immunization and other advances in public health. This in turn made them a powerful voting bloc. But not later generations. They’ve been underserved/underimmunized, and now that mass and social media have made them right-wing, are avoiding protection against Covid and other threats, while taking steroids, eating only meat, etc. So don’t expect them to live to old age as loyal right-wingers, propagandists! You sabotaged your own future.

Excellent article. There's a brilliant researcher at CDC, Dr. Fangjun Zhou (naturalized US citizen) who does brilliant work with virtually no fanfare. He's an economist and mathematician. Here is a summary from one of his publications with NIH link to follow. "Among approximately 117 million children born during 1994-2023, routine childhood vaccinations will have prevented approximately 508 million lifetime cases of illness, 32 million hospitalizations, and 1,129,000 deaths, at a net savings of $540 billion in direct costs and $2.7 trillion in societal costs."

Childhood vaccinations prevented 1.29 million deaths as compared to the cells from how many fetuses?

Same with the death penalty. It was outlawed here back in the early 60s.

Connecticut only recently dropped religious belief as an excuse to opt out of vaccination requirements for public schools. At the time, the Pro-Death forces rallied at the Capitol to oppose the legislation. I wandered around the modest crowds. Many were sporting signs and buttons saying "My body. My choice." But it's not their body. It's their child's. And no one can say that a toddler has any religious beliefs. In fact, many religions have a minimum age requirement. And ... for the trillionth time ... religion is a lifestyle choice.

pstokk's avatar

Also, vaccination is "other people's bodies, my choice", considering the risk to those who can't vaccinate.

In 2024, West Virginia saw its first measles case since 2009 "when an 'under-vaccinated' individual in Morgantown came back from an overseas trip. That case was contained to one person, though more than 150 people were exposed. State health experts said that only West Virginia’s herd immunity kept it from becoming an outbreak." https://pulitzercenter.org/stories/west-virginias-vaccine-divide

Strict school vaccination requirements work!

My county (snohomish) is now measles free. The February outbreak was from a SC visitor who infected about 17 residents. No one has shown up spotted in the last six weeks. Yay, vaccines.
