The provosts and presidents of elite colleges and universities have known since Bush II that all the grievance noise was just that, noise. But instead of standing up for their institutions they caved for their donors.

In the late 80s they were the Quayle Youth, and they were smug as fuck. My working theory is that they were pissed off that 60s radicals got all the pussy, and they wanted theirs too. Absent any social skills women might like. TYFYATTM.

Now do opposition to gender transition, the other scapegoat issue the right invented totally out of thin air in 2016

Spoiler alert: Colleges aren't liberally or leftically biased. Leftists and liberals are just more reality-ally biased.

Yes.

The valedictorian at lawyer daughter's Oregon law school graduation was an anti-choice activist, and the speaker was Lisa Murkowski.

To be fair, some of the professors boycotted. I was ready to walk out, but the valedictorian didn't show, and Murkowski was not political at all (she was warned).

I was a student at Berkeley in the Reagan era. The College Republicans were always the most organized, strident student organizations on campus. Maybe they had to be in a sea of Berkeley liberalism.

Fifth Dentist's avatar

The College Republicans in 1930s Germany were well organized and put on some great parades with torches.

They also were great at getting a group together to burn books.

The constant bleating of unreality and lies was a part of what led me out of conservatism.

Christians were not being persecuted.

Gays just wanted equal rights and were just like the rest of us.

I was not shut down on the local college campus.

I NEVER had an issue with sexual harassment or anti-discrimination rules in the workplace or got "suppressed" by them.

Deregulation just let the fucking fuck weasels loose to wreck the global economy.

It was absurd to think Iran or Iraq were in any position to attack or destroy the United States.

Supply side economics didn't fucking work.

It was later I came to realize that they didn't occupy a different reality than I did. My fellow travelers just wanted a goddamned excuse to be assholes and proud assholes and escape social and professional consequences for it.

It is not enough for them that they get to spew their bile and venom directed at us, not even enough that they're getting to make their bile and venom directed at us official policy for this country.

No they demand that we LOVE THEM for their bile and venom directed at us.

Fascists were ever thus.

I confess I went to a Young Republicans meeting with a friend in high school.

I wasn't much into politics at age 17, but they gave us free beer, so I went along.

It became apparent, though, that paying for one's own beer was preferable to attending such things.

fair_n_hite_451's avatar

"free" beer can sometimes be very costly.

These people equate being disagreed with or, far worse, being ignored, as oppression and censorship. Righties, especially rightie Christianists, cannot STAND being ignored.

nor can they tolerate anything that differs from their world view.

Small, fragile minds that really have no place in a university setting.

Many of them probably spent their entire childhood never being disagreed with or, far worse, being ignored.

Those photos of John Kerry windsurfing superciliously at us, the horror!

Parakeetist's avatar

John Edwards turned out to be a real jerk.

However, Kerry was a decent guy and would have made a good president.

larry gassan's avatar

Kerry didnt punch back at the draft-dodging asshole who was Mr Swift Boat. Felt it was beneath him. Americans noticed. They like fighters.

Fifth Dentist's avatar

Same with Gary Hart. He was polling in the "kicking Reagan's ass" range when he did the stupid thing.

How quaint it seems nowadays that such a think could be a political scandals that could sink a presidential campaign. Well, I guess it could, but only for a Democrat.

A Republican candidate could chop a 6-year-old boy's head off in Central Square at noon, molest his corpse on live TV, eat his brains and befoul the body with his own feces and Jesse Watters would be, like, "Ron Desantis got a little wild today in New York City where he was attending a fundraiser (chuckle), but his tax policies are what people should really be talking about."

The thing I don't like about the College Republicans is that they want to take away human rights and get us all killed

Shallow state's avatar

The self reinforcing message to the Republican party, and especially the willfully ignorant MAGA, about those Republican identifying college students not toeing the party line that they are being persecuted, is, of course, that higher education is intrinsically corrupting, thus higher education is an enemy not just to be avoided, but destroyed.

This reeking abomination of carbon molecules cannot possibly DIE soon enough to spare this nation further shame and loss of financial as well as military security.

Seriously, esteemed comrades; the orange authoritarian has done tremendous damage to the US in a variety of critical contexts. The security we've all taken forgranted for so long is now gone.

We are in a very bad place.
