Colonel Valentin Gavrilov, the man in the original photo, is no Sheriff Clarke.

A lot of those are indeed commemorative awards, including armed forces anniversary and length of service. Also World War II anniversary medals, the latter issued and awarded every ten years from 1965 to 1995 and every five years thereafter, so if he is alive in 2020 he will get another one.

And sure, the colonel does toe the party line in regards to the current situation in Ukraine, which does not hurt his chances of being trotted out and awarded a thing or two for some photo op whenever it suits the Putin regime. That said, he still actually personally earned a lot of what he is wearing.

We all but know that *45 would outdo not only Clarke and the Russian colonel, but also any number of the North Korean generals in the attire and bling category if he only could.

I can solve the Assange problem in five minutes:

"Hola, Metropolitan Police? Si, this is Fernando Esconoba, but you may call me Larry. I am backstairs butler at Ecuadoran Embassy. We will be having Fire Escape Drill Thursday between 3 and 4:30. Maybe you come soon and observe and bring Poddy Wagon maybe, si? Bueno."

I read that piece earlier. I found it somewhat heartening at the end.

I get it - I have the same qualms myself sometimes.

I used to have Internet arguments with a guy who saw "I treat people as they treat me" as a valid moral position. I always argued that his position should be "I treat people as I wish I would be treated" - and then "Respect is earned, not innate" - but now I just don't have the patience for that.

I guess I'm fortunate in that, in my daily personal interactions ( few as they may be ), I usually don't have to deal with any of these people. Perhaps that would make me more reluctant to call out their bullshit online.

But, I wouldn't count on that.
