And I guess reporters do to, since they often summarize what they think he said rather than quote one of his rambling word-salads. But I think it would help a lot of reporters did quote Trump at length just so people can see if plain text what an incoherent ignoramus he has become.
No, they clean up his word salads because they want to try to get his idea across, and in the process they make him look a lot less idiotic.
