You don't have to jeopardize your own safety in order to speak up in the moment, especially if you're alone, and essentially at the mercy of a guy who's probably armed. It's better to stay safe, and to contribute to things like schools, or state elections, or even to go back with a group and help make changes. Create springboards to effect change gradually. You don't have to risk your life. The only thing I would think you could do would be to have a conversation with him, pleasantly, and let him see that a middle aged woman can be a person he can have a conversation with. That alone is a change for him, probably.
That is exactly true. I read a quote somewhere, from a white Southern lady, to the effect that she used to be able to just walk into a room without question, now she has to worry what "they" think of her. It was so revealing, that she always took for granted, or even enjoyed, that before, "THEY" had to worry about HER, but now SHE has to worry about what THEY think. Pure white privilege, weeping that other people might now be considered equal to her.
Don't forget, also, what happened when people TRIED to "domesticate" and get rid of cats in the Middle Ages.... rats running rampant... Black Plague, anyone?
They don't have the brains to realize that she didn't say ALL of his supporters are deplorable. So by yelling HOW DARE YOU INSULT ME, they're saying they are IN the half she's talking about. If they weren't, there'd be no reason to get upset.

I don't know, Angela. I've lived in the South most of my life and I've been in that sort of dilemma plenty. Sometimes I go schoolmarm and say, "We don't use that word" and sometimes I give the freeze-face and sometimes I'm just too fucking tired to even bother. If it's somebody you'll never see again, you could ignore it, or maybe open up a discourse by saying, "Have you had bad experiences with black people?" If it's somebody you see a lot, you need to let them know you don't share their opinion, or otherwise you'll keep hearing it.
