1000x this. It's in our cultural heritage to be mystical idiots.

My brother & I have farmed together for 40 years. I'm on FB, he's not, which probably means he's the smart one. I've told him in detail about the Q Anon stuff and which of our acquaintances are promoting it. He is unable to believe anyone can be that stupid, even when I show him. So I guess he is a Q denier?Note: I have 40 years of him describing, sometimes in detail, how & why some of the folks here are morons, so it's not that he is unwilling.

This started when those great people at Cambridge Analytica identified and targeted the "persuadables" and then shot as much misinformation as possible at them at the same time Russia was doing exactly the same thing by "firehosing". Cambridge Analytica had two goals, Trump's election and Brexit. They crushed it.

The morons, nee persuadeables, then spread misinformation using the "telephone" method meaning adding details they "thought" they read or heard.

The problem is that nobody, including the not so great people at Cambridge Analytica, know how to stop it. As Evan mentioned, trying to use facts, or rational reasoning doesn't work. It is maddening and terrifying.

The internet is great at creating echo chambers.. which can amplify stupid to a level that's otherwise hard to imagine.

I just heard. She seemed like a real nice, down to earth lady.

I guess that lays to rest the burning question of a generation.

The ones I’ve met have had barely any religious indoctrination. Like this woman I’ll call Samantha who supported Trump and voted straight Republican ( but didn’t because she “forgot” to register). She flipped off protestors in front of Planned Parenthood and gets foos stamps up the ass despite her children living not with her. She screws the system coming and going AND believes Biden is going to “legalize pedophilia”. When I pointed out how no political party- ever- could take that stand and get nominated much less voted into office all I got from her brother (who relayed all this to me) was”Well... my brother and grandparent said the same thing.” My reply, “Then they’re all stupid”

I'm with you on this. If companies don't want to be liable for content, some kind of requirement to make reasonable efforts at moderation, at least for large commercial platforms, really is necessary.
