Repubs "win" a lot of arguments by just changing what words mean. They're terrible at governing, but really slick at messaging. For one thing, they are okay with blatant lies and meaningless mottos.
This is kinda how Donald Trump can declassify documents just by thinking about it. McDonalds can replace all its workers with machines just because someone somewhere thought a $25 an hour minimum wage would be nice. Yeah, I know what you're thinking: but, but, but... Texas has a $7.25 an hour minimum wage.... why would McDonalds do this in Texas? Don't be pissed at McDonalds. Get angry at the guy in Poughkipsie who thought "Man, a $25 minimum wage would go a long way toward providing working peoeple a little economic security and dignity." Fuckin' loser. Now he's spoiled it for EVERYONE!
I've always figured people thinking that not having to/being unable to work would cause people to be lazy and never do anything, it's like starving people imagine binge-eating and the very repressed imagine total sexual consumption and predation...
Really, if you can't work for a while, most people get restless and need to get *something* done before very long. But the corporations want everyone exhausted, stressed out and desperate, even if they wouldn't hire that everyone or pay them anything livable.
Then funny enough, demand subsidy money before they do anything even if they never actually do the 'job creating' ...or producing anything of enduring value when they don't have to to make their profits, so.... Projection?
The problem is not automation itself. Machines have been taking the place of humans and animals since the start of the industrial revolution, and up to a point this has meant a higher standard of living and shorter working hours. The unemployment rate is not higher than it was 200 years ago. But workers had to fight for what they got with unions and influence on the political parties. But Republicans have got some "working class" people to essentially turn against their own best interest by offering support for racism and religion. The rules set up in the New Deal have been changed to benefit employers and especially increase profits of big corporations. Now automation is just one of the tools that big employers use.
And my Kroger is bizarrely opposite. If I'm running in for one thing, I'll use the self-checkout. Lately, I'm seeing each self-checkout register occupied by people with overflowing shopping carts, doing all the scanning and bagging themselves.
See, but who will republicans get to yell at/talk down to now that there’s just a bunch of machines? How will republicans assert their dominance? Did anyone think of that?
One reason I do this is so I can properly pack my (canvas, reusable) bags, otherwise I end up with 3 things in the canvas bags, 5 plastic bags to hold fifteen cans, and then 2 to hold a gallon of milk. even though everything would fit inot the canvas ones.
Also I am picky. produce goes into one bag, cold stuff into another, etc. Much easier to unload when I get home, and soft things dont get squished.

They can insert their dominance over machines. Until the machines get fed up with it.
Skynet!
Comcast internet is expensive, unreliable, and locally non-competitive. Complete bullshit and larceny, in other words.

Well replacing 25 serving jobs with 5 more qualified jobs manufacturing and 1 maintaining and repairing job is still a net loss.
US Manufacturing output has continued to increase all along, just as US Manufacturing employment has cratered.
Oh god the WORST remake of "Highlander" ever... "There can be only one!" Zzzziiippp
Someone posted this the other day, but it really fits the tone of this article:
