What is particularly interesting is that Mr. Everett, one of the great orators of his age, knew right away the power and impact of Lincoln's speech. He realized his speech would be forgotten. Most people at the time didn't. Many in crowd didn't realize the President had spoken at all.
Am I the only person who understood that this was not a sincere statement, but rather was an offhand, smart-aleck remark? I mean, he did shrug and have a bit of a smirk when he said it.
No, of course not. I wasn't defending him (please) and I didn't mean to single your post out (I have more respect for fellow frequent posters than that). I was reacting to the apparent consensus opinion that he was being prickly and defensive with that particular remark. Instead, I thought it was pretty obvious that he was just being puerile and snotty. In the end it doesn't matter anyway -- a lame defense during a debate is a lame defense, regardless of the motivation. And Trump's remark was lame, bigly. Sad!
Classy to the bitter end.
And Plan 9 is fun to watch. Donnie makes small children cry when they hear his voice.

Trumperdink: "I've got all these women to sue, Hillary Clinton to jail, the media to intimidate, and Putin's agenda to enact. I'm swamped."
Count Rudy: "Get some rest. If you haven't got your health, you haven't got anything."
Big League libelz!

Because joking about his own paranoid obsessions is a better answer?
