At least as important as the type of sunscreen is the amount and application. Zinc oxide is certainly reef friendly and is effective. You do have to use more than a light smear, and reapply after time in the water or after some hours out in the sun because ya sweat. Mixing zinc oxide with some chemical blockers can reduce the effectiveness of either. My personal favorite as a diver is Badger but there are other good ones as well.

Heed the Aussie "Slip, Slop, Slap" campaign too. Cover up, use sunscreen, and wear a broad brim hat.

I am here for the face sunscreen recommendations. My eyes water like F$#@ if use most chemical sunscreens, and the mineral ones are basically white paste.

I have sensitive skin though the particular ingredient in US chemical that seems to irritate my face is octocrylene. My favorite is the Hada Labo UV White Gel. I like the Biore one mentioned, but only as my reapply sunscreen. It has alcohol in it which makes it a great formula to put on my sweaty mid-hike face because it doesn't feel like layering grease on top of grease but not gentle enough to apply right after washing my face. The Hada Labo can do double duty as a morning moisturizer which is why it's my favorite. You don't have to be as careful with the Asian and European sunscreens because a lot of the next gen chemical filters are not as irritating and the chemical filters in US sunscreen.

I use LaRoche Posey Anthelios cream for my body parts and I'm just starting on HydroPeptide Solar Defense Non-Tinted SPF 50 for my face. I absolutely loathe that these products are as expensive as they are and thank all the gods for AOC. I can't wait until there are more like her in Congress.

Where is John McCain when we need him? Oh yeah. That "loser" died. As a POW who went on to suffer from malignant melanoma, and also from radical empathy (which I suspect earned him Trump's "loser" epithet more than his service to our country), he would have backed AOC in this cause. I am 100% sure.

I love that Biore Watery Essence Sunscreen that you turned me onto earlier this year, on twitter I think. The only thing is the pricing / packaging is kind of tricky and weird on amazon. There seem to be several prices for essentially the same product and its hard to compare because they use different measurements etc. THANK YOU for the new product references.

Worst sunburn I ever got was as a kid at Crested Butte Colorado in february. I don't want to hear any bullshit about not needing sunscreen in winter. Also, as a geologist, not only is sunscreen necessary, but has likely saved my life. I work outside in the mountains most of the time.

Ryan Knight has violated the 2.1 version of Twain's law, i.e., "Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought an asshole, than to open it and remove all doubt." However, given my lifelong sun exposure I'm afraid my facial skin is only a short ways from being full on Keith Richards in a year or two.

If you can spend a little, both Belif 50 SPF and /or Inishfree face sunscreens work well & bonus make your skin feel good. Vanicreme makes a broad spectrum for people with sensitive skin/allergies that is great & less than $20. But I'd love to be able to get the same good quality drugstore brand sunscreens in Boston that I get in Cork, and a lot of them are under $15 USD & don't make me look like a ghost.

Well, friends, the outer bands of Tropical Storm Hilary are beginning to approach Los Angeles. The current track has the storm moving east of us, but the whole system is apparently larger than the entire State of Arizona (insert obligatory “Americans will use any forms of measurement except the metric system” joke here), so it’s feeling pretty Florida over here. Last night it was hot and sticky and absolutely miserable for those of us so used to cool Pacific breezes that we still don’t have air conditioning.

I’m not made for tropical weather or humidity. I live in a coastal desert, goddamn it.

Also, Ron DeSantis can go fuck himself. He offered his “support” for Southern California during this storm in an attempt to look presidential, but it’s far too little, far too late. His entire political career has been parroting the rhetoric of third rate 4chan shitposters, with particular ire aimed at the very state he claims to be concerned about. He’s deluding himself if he thinks that making mouth noises in the direction of statesmanship will win him any love from Californians now. (Plus, our Republicans are all Trump cultists anyway.)

The DSA and Justice Dems are chronically infested with unserious white guys who object to:

" doing a small thing effectively while still fighting for those big causes?"

and doing what you can when your big push fails.

Is the kind of politics that quietly save lives and makes government work.

I'm from the old country where they get hardly any sunshine so I'm really white. (Leaning towards pale blue.) I only use sunscreen with zinc oxide because that's an actual physical sunscreen. Most of the other stuff is chemical sunscreens and don't work as well for me.

My husband has lots of skin cancer, but it is because in the old days, it was even less effective and yes, eschewing it was a man thing. He was a raft guide and ski patroller. So far no melanoma, only (!!) basal cell and some squamous cell but it needs constant attention with treatment to keep from spreading. Put that sunscreen on! Even if it's the shitty American brands, because it is better than nothing.

I tan like crazy. Every day, all exposed skin gets sunscreen, even in winter. We have high altitude sun and it is INTENSE.
