Which is why Republicans are trying so damned hard to convince the in-betweeners that Trump didn't really commit any crimes worthy of prosecution, based on amy fucking rationalization at all that they can make stick. If they can get the in-betweeners, then they have a 53-47 minority...which we all know translates to a narrow win for them through their structural advantage in electoral politics.

I think the distinction is:

The cops go after poor people and people of color for petty crimes or even no crimes.

However, if you're a rich white scumbag committing fraud or some other "white collar crime," you're more likely to be indicted by the feds.

Middletown was not nearly as bleak as he makes it out to be, either. Especially the part of town he grew up in where most owned their homes, had good blue collar jobs, boats, summer cabins and such.
