Republicans have done more to increase income disparity in the country than any other. Then they use the resulting problems associated with income disparity and blame Democrats. Win, win. Walk away with all the money laughing.
CA makes it easier than any other state to qualify a recall for the ballot. You only need a petition with signatures representing ten percent of the voters from the previous midterm election, so that’s a low threshold
I can understand auditioning, just to see if an actor is right for a part. Big name with a well-known career, seems like it would be a relatively informal process, make sure they click with the role. But the total picture being painted here, yeah, that was a slap in the face.
The repub who used to have Gascon's job is leading the recall. Since he can't win fairly, he wants a shot at a recall election win. He's having a teeny bit of trouble, though, as it has come out that he (Cooley) did some consulting work for a tv personality who was seeking to avoid registering as a sex offender.
The recall process has been totally bastardized by the repubs who made if okay to pay people to gather signatures. If you have enough money, you'll get enough signatures. In comparison, a true grass-roots movement to raise CA's minimum wage couldn't get enough signatures for its petition because they didn't have a well-funded campaign organization and because they didn't pay for signature gatherers.
Usage of the recall process in CA is really becoming pernicious. I'm not sure who is behind this one, but the Newsom and Boudin recalls were initiated by Republicans (don't be fooled by seemingly grassroots efforts, these were started by GOP operatives in the state). Because Republicans can't win elections in the state they are using the recall process to effect policies they are otherwise unable to effect because of how they suck so badly. Now it failed with Newson, in no small part because Newsom had someone who is a raving madman sort of running against him. The Boudin, and I'm guessing the Garcon, recalls are just basically throw the bum out because I perceive crime and other problems that the DA has nothing to do with I blame on the DA. My guess is that Garcon will be out of a job after the vote.
The problem is, there's no one else that can solve it either. A lot of people who didn't vote for Bass for Mayor didn't do so because her plan to deal with it requires the cooperative efforts of a lot of different agencies in the city which is a wasteland of deadlocked bureaucracy. A lot of people locally are exceptionally tired of the same song, 99th verse of 'well we'd do something about it but the Department of Paperclips won't give us paperclips so oh well, sorry'.
And either knowing how fucked up the city coggery is or not understanding how the Mayor alone can't force change in this city, they vote for people who are making more straight forward promises of action which are also equally unrealizable.
Don't disagree but truthfully, no one on the ground here wants to hear another round of 'well if Democrats would only just' or if the 'GOP would just fucking stop-'
We're beyond that. Ears are closed. All they see is inaction because everyone is equally busy and equally guilty of an endless game of 'I accuse!' and they're mad at everyone
Having lived in the mythical land of the EU, I do generally trust their much more functioning, active police forces in as much as I trust any cop anywhere.
In SF, part of the message was Boudin wasn't pursuing hate crime enhancements in cases where AAPI people were attacked. There was a lot more nuance to those cases, but they got amplified by the recall campaign and it became a big GOTV siren.
The big problem is that the threshold to get a recall on the ballot is way to low. It’s made it ripe for abuse, especially be republicans who would rather put their energy into making it impossible for democrats to govern than come up with policy ideas that would appeal to California voters.

infuriating
I wouldn't trust an active, functioning police force anyway.

Boris resigned...How does Simba know what's going on at Shan's?

Respectfully disagree with most of the article.
Hey, he was right about Iraq, at least.
