I really liked how he conveyed empathy to that journalist re: his family in Gaza being killed. He seems to understand the complexity of the situation.

Mike Johnson, asshole.

https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2023/10/house-gop-no-israel-aid-unless-rich-tax-cheats-get-a-break.html

A few years ago, Representative Mike Johnson, now Speaker of the House, told an audience that democracy is bad. “By the way, the United States is not a democracy,” he explained. “Do you know what a democracy is? Two wolves and a sheep deciding what’s for dinner. You don’t want to be in a democracy.”

This is an extremely common view among American conservatives, who — unlike right-of-center parties in most democracies worldwide — have largely refused to accept the legitimacy of democratic decision-making over economic policy. In particular, they regard the government’s tax-and-transfer power as an abusive and illegitimate infringement on the right of rich people to keep their income.

That belief is vital to explain Johnson’s new maneuver, which is to tie any new funding for Israel to a demand to reduce IRS enforcement of wealthy people’s tax compliance

OT: Oh, boy.

Like Matt Gaetz, it appears that Chrisofascist Mike Johnson also has a secret "adopted minority son" who isn't his adopted son. Gaetz moved Nestor into his house when the boy was 12 yrs-old. Johnson moved Michael into his house when the boy was 14 yrs-old.

Follow up question, Speaker, do you share any genes with this person?

Expand full comment

“Have you seen the story ‘The Blind Side’? That was our story, except my Michael was not an NFL prospect…we took him in as our own.” Yeah . . . given what has come out about the whole "Blind Side" thing, I can believe that your story with Michael is probably similar. I'm curious as to whether the kid's parents or relatives had any say in what the Johnson's did. And I am probably just being cynical here, but the last bit there, "we took him in as our own" sounds rather possessive, in a property way.

Expand full comment

It's all interesting because his flavor of Christian still sees black people as a slave race.

Wasn't that whole "Blind Side" story subsequently exposed as an enormous grift?

He was taken in by them in 1999. Johnson became a LA state rep in 2015. How much of the "public spotlight" would he have been in that he requested to be out of it? Or was it that it wasn't "requested" by him, but "required" by them.

Expand full comment

So, the former kid was about 29 when Johnson was elected. This lack of presence as a "token" may be the Black guy's choice. He's an adult, not a pet.

Did the hyper-Christian Johnsons provide this individual higher education? Maybe a trade? At least a mule and a plow?

Expand full comment

That's...not weird at all actually. Gaetz' situation is weird and not well-explained, this seems pretty normal. Why should we care if he officially adopted him or not?

Expand full comment

If Michael has been legally adopted, then we don't. The grey area is Johnson saying Michael's adopted if he's not.

Expand full comment

Or, we don't care because a family taking in a child is a nice thing to do, regardless of their race or adoptive status. He's an adult now and doesn't want to be involved in public life, and yet people are insinuating all sorts of things about him.

Expand full comment

Is there a market somewhere where they’re buying these kids? Down in New Orleans, perhaps?

Expand full comment

Yes, there is basically a "market" where these jebofascists get their adopted brown and Black babies.

There are whole books written about it, e.g. "The Child Catchers" or something like that.

There have been several prominent cases where those children ended up dead b/c of good Christian discipline. *sigh*
