Henlo. Brib keeps falling asleep and waking up. The mattress Mom gave me, which is the one she's used for 30+ years, is so soft that the minute I snuggle down into the middle of it, I am sucked into the warp of time and space and cannot get out.

The hilarious thing about all this goings on with the English royal family is that the king is simply making Andrew a commoner like all of us, which is evidentially a fate worse than death for a royal.

The hilarious thing about American commentary on this is that Americans haven't managed to do crap all about the Epstein friend they had before them to judge, other than make him their President.

Charles: Look Andy, you're very toxic for the brand right now. Things haven't been quite right since mummy died and we need to play it all with a straight bat, you know? So we're going to move you out of sight for a bit. No worries chap, I've got a lovely stipend for you and a charming Chateau a ways up North. We'll see about bringing you back on board once things have calmed down a spot. Right, got it? Cheerio!

when you look at what the Royals actually look like, you begin to see what happens when you keep marrying your cousins, over and over and over...Andrew and a few of the younger Royal 'ladies' seem to be all jaw and teeth and not much brain. I would hope to live to see the next king. He shows promise.

I've been in a vile mood since Friday, so today I decided to watch the documentary "The Brilliant Bronte Sisters" (available on YouTube), followed by the BBC drama "To Walk Invisible: The Brontë Sisters" (available on PBS and Amazon Prime), I was in a mood to commiserate with some intelligent, talented women who were intellectually, spiritually and economically victimized by the society in which they lived, and the weak men on whom they were forced to rely in order to earn a living. They were complex, they were passionate, they were geniuses, and they dared to explore themes that in their time were taboo. I admire them so much.

Women have only in the last 50 years or so actually been acknowledged as thinking humans. Barely. When Margaret Thatcher was appointed as whatever she was appointed as (sorry, my memory tends to wobble at times) there was a 'hur hur hur' joke about, "I can hardly wait to see what happens when she has the rag on". oh yeah, side splitter. And yet almost every single country, almost without fail, has had women rulers, prime ministers, presidents. Except one or maybe two.

I don't know the Bronte sisters well, but Jane Eyre is a decades long favorite. Every time I read it, I find new ways to appreciate Charlotte's writing, and her ability to get us inside Jane's head and the restrictive world she lives in.

When it was first published it was considered SHOCKING! It is, in fact, a very feminist and somewhat socialist novel, with the story building slowly to the proposal scene where Jane confronts Mr. Rochester with her independence of spirit, which women were not supposed to do. The mere fact that she is in love with a MARRIED MAN!!!!, even though she doesn't know it, blew the Victorian mind. She says:

"Do you think I am an automaton? — a machine without feelings? and can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of living water dashed from my cup? Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! — I have as much soul as you, — and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh; — it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God's feet, equal, — as we are!"

Let me know if for some reason you are unable to watch it on Prime. Yes, I live in the States. If you can't find it, I could put it on my Google Docs site and you could download it. It's extremely well done, and a very accurate depiction of the 3 women's genius and their struggles to achieve independence. It does this without the sentimentality of other films I have seen about them.

The world is very unpleasant. I know I/we come here to do what?: laugh, learn, escape, enjoy people we will never meet but are happy to know about, feel better, try to understand, give expression to our frustration, try to fight back with humor, anger, intelligence and solidarity; but surely we must not avoid our devastation at how cruel and hideous humans are/can be. I am enraged and planning hideous consequences in my mind for that monster with the terrified wolf he torture murdered. Christ, her eyes. But we must face the ugly and gather together in response. Do not run away to comfort (even if they are the best cakes ever, which they surely are) - because running away is what evil thrives on. Do not submit to the creeps. Which means you must look, even when you don't want to. Fight, scream, cry, curse, protest, have nightmares, maybe get hurt, or even die. Isn't that what we are here for, along with the dick jokes, the mommy blogs and those fabulous cakes we like? We all be going to die, let's not pretend we are afraid to face the shit and try to make it better. (And eat some fabulous cakes we like.) I am not suggesting we lose humor, not at all (that is THE best weapon) but only that we use humor to fight the good fight, regardless of how awful and just goddamn depressing the good fight can be. Honest solidarity is our thing. Fight the good fight. Be brave. And eat the cakes we like. All the best to fellow Wonks.

The universe is an odd combination of The Great Mandela and pure chaos. The Wheel of Life represents the inter-connectedness of all beings and existence, and is a complex circle of death and rebirth that beings are trapped in until they achieve enlightenment. The "cycle of good versus evil" refers to a philosophical struggle that suggests an ongoing, potentially endless, pattern of conflict and resolution.

And there is no enlightenment at the end. And we are in a down swing of The Wheel. Only through our own efforts will the Wheel swing back up again.

At least, that's how I see it.

When I was a child my first thought was "Whose job was it to get rid of all the vast amounts of poop and urine that must have accumulated on the ship every day?" I bet they made Noah's daughters do it. And where did they keep the vast amounts of drinking water they would have needed?? I'm surprised they didn't all die of E.coli, salmonella or cholera. Also, what about all the plant life on Earth, why was it all allowed to drown??? Also, were Noah and his family vegetarians, or did they bring along some extra animals for their own food? Enquiring minds want to know....Somehow I knew better than to ask the nuns these questions.

Expand full comment
Queen Méabh's avatar

Yes, it is upsetting. But we need to be reminded every now and then of what kind of scum we are up against. I don't think this is the right time to get squeamish.

The Nazis killed all the pets, including dogs, of people they persecuted, particularly Jewish people. That horror could happen again, indeed it is happening right now, every day.

When I was arrested I left 2 cats behind who would have starved to death if I hadn't known the phone number by memory of an old friend, who fed them while I was in jail for 8 days. She made it clear that she couldn't keep doing it forever, so if I had not been released on bond, in spite of the prosecutor's objections, they would have had to be euthanized. I had to think about that every night, and deal with it.

These people are literally monsters, and they walk among us, and we need to know that and be prepared.
