First and foremost, why NOT use paternity leave if you have it accrued REGARDLESS of the gender of your partner. I guarantee you Pete B did not pull the fainting couches out and say “mercy I do find myself unable to come to work today. I demand you pay me and apologies for the lack of notice”.
Plenty of straight men who work for the government take paternity leave and this should be a thing available to all men.
