Well that's certainly part of it. They hear the same bunkum (see what I did there?) ricocheting around in their personal echo chamber for so long that they regard as being self-evident, like the sun rising each morning. Then when they express it while speaking a general audience they are completely unprepared when anyone takes issue with it.

Because as a Real American (TM) he will naturally be a Republican.

To quote one of my favorite children's books, <i>Elsie Dinsmore</i>, "And when you die, if you're very good, you'll go to heaven and then you'll be white too!" (Yeah, you have to find the original book, not the "adapted" reissue, which strips out all the good stuff.)
