That they received only 6 anti- letters seems like a tidbit a competent newspaper would publish.

On 13-July-1920 the New York Times said in an editorial that Robert Goddard was wrong to believe that rockets could function in the vacuum of space, and added:

That Professor Goddard with his 'chair' in Clark College and the countenancing of the Smithsonian Institution, does not know the relation of action to reaction, and of the need to something better than a vacuum against which to react—to say that would be absurd. Of course he only seems to lack the knowledge ladled out daily in high schools."

On 17-July-1969, the day after Apollo 11 landed on the moon, the Times published the following retraction:

Further investigation and experimentation have confirmed the findings of Isaac Newton in the 17th Century and it is now definitely established a rocket can function in a vacuum as well as in an atmosphere. The Times regrets the error.

What I have always found funny about this is that the Times' estimate of "the knowledge ladled out daily in high schools" was probably completely accurate.

Fox hosts blatant lies exposed by Liz Cheney received a tiny headline halfway down the front page. Kind of important information about an attempt to overthrow our Democracy to be given such short shrift by the NYT's. Because, they say, they don't want to seem partisan. Bottom line is they know if they told the truth about Republicans every day it would "seem" partisan only because the truth is awful.

They also didn't think Hitler was as bad as he might seem.

Loving laudatory headlines from the NYT are preserved for special people worthy of their admiration.

The "both sides" thing is really destroying the country by effectively legitimizing GOP lies and making them appear to be less seriously harmful.

You are correct. Apologia all around.

The scary truth of this type of reporting is that it works. And it works on more than just Republicans. Dems are a majority of the populace. These companies (other than Fox) still have to make money. So, this hot garbage is still compelling enough to sell to the majority.

Repughs also use a lot more straight up psychological manipulation in their emails. My 'sad weak p00p' mailbox is almost to a thousand unread emails now; many of them have subject lines like, 'Are you a Democrat now?' 'You're breaking Donald Trump's heart!' 'Every time we asked, you DECLINED' etc. Dems are more, 'Please read; don't delete!' or, when the gloves come off, 'Read Bernie Sanders BRUTAL take-down of Mitch McConnell'. I can also pretty well guarantee I've gotten nowhere near 900+ lefty emails.

That's why I set up a special mailbox to filter those into. And I'm only getting them from two main sources - I can just imagine what being on all their lists would be like. They've got a goddam firehose and Dems are out here with a watering can.

Also Stalin apologists, right through the Ukraine genocide, which the NYT reporter personally witnessed but refused to report.
