I know it’s probably nuance to many not likely to be made clearer by Dems, but liberal politicians should be clear that they aren’t “pro-abortion,” they are “pro-choice.” Conservatives enjoy mischaracterizing pro-choicers as a bunch of ghouls who gleefully support terminating pregnancy. It’s false of course, and silly, and gross, but I think Dems can capitalize on how poorly Dobbs has been received, and perhaps strengthen our position on pro-choice by acknowledging the often difficult and painful decision it is. I’ve been through it with my wife when we lost our second child due to severe congenital abnormalities involving the heart, kidneys and brain. It was a nightmare, despite the unforgettable display of human empathy and compassion we received from caregivers. Many Republicans would mandate that our unborn child be delivered to term despite having one kidney, plus heart, brain and skull defects. People should have the right to choose. In many ways I feel abortion is a terrible, painful and troubling choice. But I also remain pro-choice because I know how difficult being a parent is. I believe it’s overwhelming for many young or unprepared parents. Raising kids is a lifelong commitment, and requires planning, financing, resources and support. Certainly I’m “pro-life” in the sense that the fewer abortions people need to choose, the better. I think many pro-choice people would agree. We don’t celebrate the procedures, we defend the often complicated personal choice.

they'll find a way to say the vote was illegitimate, or to stall putting it in place, you watch

That's what I'm worried about too. It's standard operating procedure among Republicans these days to fuck with ballot measures that pass but they don't like.

"This would seem to disprove a long-held belief that Democrats would perform better in “red” states if they were less openly supportive of abortion."

> The state can still restrict abortion after fetal viability — generally considered after 24 weeks or the start of the third trimester — except when “necessary to protect the pregnant patient’s life or health.”

That's Roe -- pre-Casey -- in a nutshell, right? None of the state's business until the fetus could survive on its own, and even then, the safety of the pregnant person takes precedence.

Here's my brief analysis based on what I said last night. This was a textbook Dem win for Ohio--the metros outvoted the rural areas and the suburbs tilted towards Blue.

Two of the four counties I said the No side had to win in SW went the same way as they did in August and a third barely edged to No at the end.

Also, there were some counties that went No where the % looks big but the raw numbers were close (which is why I prefer to look at it from that POV).

Interesting fact--the vote totals for Issues 1 & 2 were nearly identical in terms of Yes/No, 2.1 to 1.6 mil but Issue 2 won a lot more counties especially in southern/SE. I'm curious to look at the numbers side by side to see where the swing is.

I don't think it helped when DeWhine described the need for a review process of decisions made by women and their doctors.

Ta, Stephen. DeWhine should pack his bags. Ohioans should be proud; I'm proud of them. J.D. Vance, as always, can open up a fun size bag of salted rat dicks; I'm sure that's what his beard smells like already.

And because it's _not_ gender specific, it also covers mens' reproductive care. Not that that's any where near as likely to ever be at risk, but one never knows with the "every sperm is sacred" crowd.

But of course the afab people's rights have been the ones that get stripped away first and fastest. Which suucks. If I were to get pregnant now, at 46 & with a history of pre-eclampsia, it would be very dangerous for me to try carry to term. Not that my only partner could; he's got a sperm count of zero.

Furious Ohio Republicans Report Widespread Incidents of Women Voting

By Andy Borowitz

OHIO (The Borowitz Report)—Irate Republican officials in Ohio have been crying foul over Tuesday night’s election results, claiming that there were “widespread cases” of women voting across the state.

Harland Dorrinson, a G.O.P. operative in Lake County, said that he had “eyewitness accounts” of “swarms of women” standing in long lines outside of polling places.

“Many of our poll workers spotted women going into voting booths and literally casting votes,” he said. “These were not isolated incidents.”

Dorrinson said the “nightmare scenario” that unfolded on Tuesday has dire implications for both Ohio and the nation.

“There is every indication that women meddled in this election,” he said. “What’s to stop them from doing it again in 2024?”
