Most of New York State is colored blue indicating that women's median annual earnings in 2013 were between 85% - 89% of the median annual earnings of men in that state. All of New York State, that is, except Long Island, which for some reason is colored yellow like neighboring New Jersey. So to clarify, the long skinny island that is situated just south of Connecticut and runs parallel to its coast is part of New York and is not part of New Jersey. On a map of the entire United States Long Island looks like just a tiny sliver of land. But it is the home of 7.7 million people (2.4% of the US pop.) and if it was a separate state it would rank 13th in total population among all of the states. It should be color-coded blue on the map like the rest of New York.
Women typically earn about 90 percent of what men are paid until they hit 35. After that median earnings for women are typically 75–80 percent of what men are paid.
