The Office Coordinator for the program I manage lives in the neighborhood this happened in. She was more concerned about her sick daughter today than this (of course), but I hope to have a conversation about her take on this incident. I am furious (but not surprised) that a sheriff committed a a "hit and run." I also want to broach this with our next-door neighbor, who is a Sac County Sheriff. I haven't actually met him even after the fence between our houses blew down in the beginning of March. He is renting, we own. We found and hired a person to replace the fence (a friend of my daughter's from way back. We trust him.) I still cannot let go of the way my son was treated by Sac County Sheriffs at a WalMart years ago...someone thought he had a gun and called 911. My son was surrounded in the automotive isle and when he calmly compiled, the leather trench coat he was wearing (on a rainy night) fanned out over his hand. As they yelled, "show us your hands!" he tried to free his hand, but had a knee shoved on his back and head immediately. His jaw was dislocated and he had a bloody lip and nose, they did not even offer so much as a tissue during the ensuing "interrogation" with many questions about being a "juggalo" or a fan of the Insane Clown Posse. Requested reimbursement for the medical bills from that incident only to have the internal investigation find the behavior "polite and professional." He had AK47's pointed at him after clowning around in the toy aisle with his girlfriend posing with stuffed animals! I might still be angry after nearly a decade...

Cop panicked and drove away, not yielding to pedestrians per CVC (Cali Vehicle Code). That being said, surrounding an emergency vehicle and pounding on it with an armed agent of the state inside is not smart. These situations have high % of violent outcomes, and this one did. I wasn't there, but I've had my unit surrounded by and angry mob before, and it is no fun.

Options:

A. Sit tight and do nothing, hoping the mob will go away. Probably the best tactical option, but the toughest for an "action officer" to implement

B. Exit the vehicle and confront multiple angry persons. Not a good option, as the chance of having to draw/use one or more weapons in self-defense approaches 100% as a function of time. Hit, spray, or shoot, or be stomped like a roach. "B" is out. And If you exit your vehicle AFTER striking a protester, your chances or making things all better is f---- zero.

C. Drive away slowly, hoping people are smart enough to get the f-- out of the way of a moving emergency vehicle and not hope their righteous stance against police brutality (an admirable one, btw), will somehow act like a Star Trek force field protecting them from injury in car vs. human collisions.

I'm not taking sides here, but there was probably bad decisions on both sides. I think the protester made a mistake by walking between 2 moving emergency vehicles. If she wasn't in a x-walk, she was jaywalking in violation of CVC. The cop major f-ed in by not immediately calling for medics as he mos def struck a pedestrian and is 100% responsible for seeing that person receives medical aid most ricky-tick.

The CHP jerk who threatened an RP with arrest deserves a foot beat on Bakersfield Sector I-5 Graveyard.

As a Wonker who has been there and done that, please heed my advice. Do not let group-think put your personal safety at risk when you peacefully demonstrate as is your Constitutional Right, for now, at least. Cops are humans, and as the MIB line goes:" a person is smart, people are dumb, panicky animals"

Now that sounds like the stuff that theme parks are made of - you should license it to Six Flags for a medium-sized fortune.

I look forward to seeing the park characters like cartoonish caricatures of Charles Bronson, Clint Eastwood, Tony Montana, and of course, Angela Lansbury. The kids are gonna go completely 5-alarm apeshit for that slaphappy group of huggable pranksters and Angela Lansbury.

At least they will if they know what's good for them...
