So you're going to buy a gun...

For lots of reasons, some folks simply should not have firearms nearby. I had a friend who served in the Marines during Desert Storm. Kind of guy you'd expect to be an NRA spokesman. After he came home, somebody asked him about guns and he said, "Not for me, man. I know myself well enough to know that's a bad idea." If you or someone you live with has issues with Depression or suicide or anger management, consider some other form of self-defense.

If you're still intent on buying a gun, please consider:

Most important: If you buy a gun, you must be willing to use it. Really think about that. You must be willing to shoot and kill another human being. This should not be taken lightly. Know the laws in your state.

-Think about how you're going to use it. A shotgun makes a good home defense gun but isn't practical to carry. Pistols are harder to shoot well under duress. How you plan to use it will help you figure out what's best for you.

-Learn how to use it and practice. Practice is IMPORTANT and if you're not going to invest the time, you'll be a danger to yourself and everyone around you. Sadly, most gun shops and shooting ranges are full of Orange Cultists. Keep your head down and go practice anyway. I have heard about some gun clubs organized by folks on our side (Black gun owners, Women gun owners, LGBTQ gun owners) but they're few and far between.

-Don't rush into it and buy the first gun you pick up. Some gun ranges offer rentals, this is a good way to experiment. Find something you are comfortable with, something that fits in your hand well, something that doesn't scare you every time you pull the trigger. It doesn't need to be a cannon. A small gun you shoot well is better than a big gun you're afraid of. Revolvers are often better for those with small hands.

-Buy a gun safe. Small ones are not expensive and worth every penny.

We're in some scary times but don't rush into a bad decision you'll regret. Be safe.
