OK, here's the thing. Turd Blossom (remember him? AKA Karl Rove) was holding up a chart last night, showing that the Vulgar Talking Yam is actually in a lot of trouble with the Republican electorate. He's severely underperforming. Nikki Haley was getting between 35% and 40%+ of the vote in a collection of about 6 states, when his margins of victory should have been considerably higher. If he can't do better than this among Republican primary voters, than his prospects in the general, where he needs to attract stray Democrats and Independents aren't looking so good.

The news from California's Senate primary (which, as a former resident, I followed closely) is disappointing but unsurprising. Any of the three Democratic candidates would be superior to Steve Garvey (who, IMHO, was beaned once too often during his MLB career), but electing Schiff will just delay the much-needed ascent of YOUNGER progressive legislators. Katie Porter was my first choice, but she was done in by Schiff's name recognition and establishment endorsements. And running against Barbara Lee definitely whittled down her support among feminists, even though Lee (my former Representative) was the oldest person in the race. Here's hoping that Porter will persist and regain her richly deserved place among young progressive standard-bearers.

Progressives are too extreme for the mainstream. And it's the mainstream that votes. Especially in a statewide election. Face it, progressives are on the fringe.

Katie Porter miscalculated. She gave up a blue seat in Congress to satisfy her own ambition. Not a good look. And even if Schiff did spend $$ propping up Steve Garvey, he ultimately saved millions in November by not having to engage in warfare with another Democrat. That money can be better spent elsewhere.

Progressives want health care to be a right, not a privilege; so does the mainstream. Progressives want to protect a woman's freedom to make her own decisions about her own body; so does the mainstream. Progressives want the super-rich to pay their just share of the cost of government; so does the mainstream. Progressives want the government to start dealing with climate change; so does the mainstream. Progressives want unions to be stronger and more effective; so does the mainstream. Progressives want...but you get the idea. If you doubt me, just check any poll results on public policy in the last twenty years. And if you think Schiff isn't a progressive, you should be watching more MSNBC. Sure Porter miscalculated -- so what? I like her "ambition," because progressives with ambition are good for the nation. And before I sign off, may I ask why you choose California, of all states, to support your thesis that progressives can't win statewide elections? You might just as well have chosen my home state of Michigan, which recently elected progressives to every statewide office and gave Democrats a majority in both houses of the state legislature. When you return to your home planet, I hope you'll pay closer attention to politics on Planet Earth. It's really very interesting!

She also decided to attack Schiff, which was a really big mistake. Schiff is incredibly and deservedly well liked here. There had been a move to try to get her in second place, but she blew it.

I totally agree with your assessment of Schiff. I would gladly vote for him if I still lived in California. The only point against him (and I think it's a major one) is his age. He and Barbara Lee have excellent records, his of legislative achievement and hers of principled stands.

“call on Trump to earn the support of voters who backed her” solely because she *wasn't* Trump.

I suspect that for most of the people who voted for Haley, Trump will come in a distant third behind "not voting at all" and Joe Biden.

It is a shame to lose Katie Porter from Congress. She would have been an excellent senator. But the amount of insanity that will be shown by the GQP after Schiff becomes senator will be worth it.

"Adam Schiff is your new senator, California!" I thought, by presidential proclamation, his name was now Adam Schitt?

In regard to North Carolina, last night Rachel spoke to Anderson Clayton the leader of the Democrats in NC, and she was amazeballs. She was so passionate about her hopes for her state that she almost cried talking about it. We need to throw as much money at her as we can. If for no other reason than never having to hear from Mark Robinson again. Look how happy we've been without Herschell Walker in our lives. :D

I like Adam Schiff as a Senator. Sad Katie and Barbara did not run for Representative, will not be in Congress next year.

That is sad. I really like both Candidates but my heart was set for Porter. I voted for her to cover the office in the interim but given Schiffs strong showing I voted for him in the permanent position.
