We were moved to the front lines of the western flank of the Iraqi forces to provide surgical support. I can still smell and hear the tanks. I did not fire any weapons, but I removed enough shrapnel and closed enough wounds to last the rest of my life. I now do consulting and volunteer work several times a month at a VA hospital. I make it a point to meet as many patients and help as much as I can in the VA and in my own office. And I am on the medical staff of the hospital's murderball team. (I am now in private practice) No Purple Heart, but I did suit up and strapped on a side arm whenever I was awake. You smell like a REMF.
