Texas has one humdinger of a Voter ID law, because they don't want any more of the voter fraud going on. You know, the kind that doesn't actually exist, but that everyone knows is rampant. One of the biggest supporters of the law is state Attorney General Greg Abbott, who's also running for governor. He's especially proud of the law's provision that requires the name on people's photo ID to be exactly the same as the name on the voter rolls, because only a voter-fraudy person would register to vote under a different name than the one on their driver's license, right? Like for instance this one guy whose name on his license is "Gregory Wayne Abbott," but whose name on the voting rolls is "Greg Abbott." That bastard's
When I got married in 1988 I was not going to change my name, and got a huge hassle from the clerks, who were telling me that to NOT change my name I had to fill out a change-of-name form, or the province would change my name automatically. But brides changing their name had to fill out the form as well to get their name changed. They could not understand the logical inconsistency in their argument. I didn't change my name. It's never been a problem.
I voted early last week. I went to the same early voting polling place I've been going to for 15 years and I had my current voter registration card (the County Clerk still sends the card to all registered voters) and my foto-ID ID ho from Texas DPS. Sure enough, my DL has my middle initial and voter registration card has my complete middle name (Asshole - mom loves that name) on the card. After a few minutes of "what do we do with this old buck-a-roo" I advised them turn the card over and see every one of the Diebold receipts they have given me with the voting maching PIN. Then I further advised that I have been voting at this precinct for a long time. The sweet irony is that I use "I Voted Today" stickers to adhere the Diebold receipts to the registration card, which the poll workers thought was a nice use.
A very nice poll volunteer then said "I've seen this guy every election for the past 5 years" who then when whispered "this process is horseshit." Seven minutes later I voted and line was getting longer with folks going through similar BS.
Fuck Abbott, Fuck Perry and anally fuck the Texas Legislature.
When I married and changed my name, I had to go to the local Social Security Admin office, and then get a new ID at the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Assuming DPS employees are about as competent as SSA or RMV employees, I'm sure the process will be just as streamlined and effective as my experience.
Which is why I recommend that no one change their name when they get married. I'm still dealing with hassles on some credit cards and whatnot, but at least I live in a more enlightened part of the country where they aren't wasting resources on non-existent voter fraud.

I am planning to change my legal name to Registered Voter in order to nip any problems like this in the bud.

Santa Anna was very strict about names matching exactly.
Hope you remembered to change your names with the Registrar of Voters.
This is good news for Michael Harry Hunt.
