It’s an open secret. SC GQP white people know it but he’s been aroun d so long and is relatively influential, so they put up with it until someone younger dethrones and disgraces him. And make no mistake; that’s what’ll happen when someone younger decides to make his orientation a liability.

In most conversations, though, it doesn't imply previous dishonesty so much as a previously unspoken embarrassing or negative revelation, e.g., "To be honest with you, I didn't do the assigned reading". The context is usually something like, "I wasn't gonna mention it, but now that you ask..."

I took a women's studies class in college where we talked about those genes and the fact that a company had patented them.

I always wondered why no one sued the company, saying that their product gave them breast cancer. It would be a fascinating test of patent law.

I can assure you that a majority of white people don't want Biff as the nominee. Maybe a majority of Republicans, especially those in South Carolina, but he certainly doesn't represent non-cult honkies like Yours Truly.

Actually, they pick and choose and distort the history to justify the politically-driven decision they've already reached. They also misread statutes and ignore the constitutional requirement of standing if it would get in their way. Standing, now there's some serious originalist doctrine that they do not feel the least bit bound by.
