It doesn't - assault is defined in most states as the -reasonable threat- of bodily harm. Battery is bodily harm. So yeah, if Denson thought at any time she was in reasonable fear of being harmed/battered, assault may be a claim that sticks. Hard to prove, though, and doesn't take away from the general feeling of this being an ABSOLUTE SHIT SHOW.
