Reposted from this morning's TABS.

From PRW: "Villago Delenda Est, my friend for decades, passed away Monday night, a week shy of his 60th birthday."

"It appears he fell and hit his head."

[I'm reposting this in the open thread because it's important. Our fellow traveler Walter Wellstone has passed, and my heart is breaking.

Addendum: Hannah did not post to the open thread, it was me, FurryCaterwauling. I didn't want this important post to be lost in a random thread, it's too important.]

Hello. This is Hannah again. Earlier today, in the morning hours in the CET time zone, Walter Wellstone reached the end of his journey on this planet. He went quickly and peacefully with top-notch professional assistance in compliance with the laws and regulations of this locale. We made the decision to launch the exit protocol after careful evaluation of his condition and evidence-based consensus that his condition no longer allowed him to function normally in his world.

Walter was my best friend, my mentor, my guru, and my hero. We met in Geneva in 2005. He was this fascinating American diplomat who carried himself at ease as a true citizen of the world in any setting. He owned a room the moment he walked in. He drew everyone around him towards him and got everyone’s attention with just the tone of his voice. We got married in 2006 and lived all over the world in those few years of his career. To me, that was the adventure of a lifetime. My native Switzerland was all I knew before I met him and, as the song says, I never reached the end of the road while traveling with him.

I used to joke that Jack Donaghy of 30 Rock was based on him except for the character’s defect of being a Republican. I fell in love with him from the moment I met him and learned to love him and admire him madly with every day we spent together.

At 78, he died a physically healthy man. His body was a work of art. It was only his brain that went to shit, as he liked to say. The last few months of his life were heartbreaking as his consciousness faded away rapidly. According to his instructions, we were required to launch the exit protocol the moment he failed to recognize me. We postponed that until the moment he failed to recognize our pets. When that happened consistently for 30 days, we knew it was time and we proceeded as planned.

Next, I’m taking his ashes to our home in Costa Rica. His ashes will fertilize a new acacia tree seedling we’ve been grooming for the occasion (he picked it himself). My job is going to be taking care of it for the foreseeable future. Regardless, he’s with me as I live on and will remain so until the day I die. He said to me I should do whatever it takes to be happy and I will do that. I knew what I was signing up for when I married a man 30 years my senior and I’m ready to live this new phase of my life with everything I can give it. No matter how that goes, he will be with me always.

He asked that I come back to Wonkette and inform you of his passing. That is now done. Thank you for the attention.
