I've had the polio vaccine, but the way these assholes are going, we may end up with a vaccine-resistant variant.

That being said, if I get infected, please, don't put me in an iron lung designed by Elon Musk, no matter how cool he thinks it looks.

When I was a kid, there were still lots of old people around who had survived polio. It wasn't unusual to see people with metal braces on their limbs, clumsily making their way down the aisles of grocery stores. It was a common sight. I was told that these were the lucky ones.

There was a girl several years older than me on the school bus when I was in grade school who had thick, heavy braces on her legs. She had a bitch of a time getting into the bus.

Ta, Gary. I survived all the "childhood illnesses" and am lucky to be alive; it was touch and go with measles followed by Reye's. The only good thing to come out of it is my chicken pox titers were measured at 1,111 and anything over 649 is immune. Thus I'm one of those adults who can't get Shingles and doesn't need Shingrix.

Ten years from now when we’re dealing with kids dying from SSPE and progressive respiratory insufficiency, I hope someone reminds this guy that it wouldn’t have been hard to be on the right side of history.

I'm old enough to have personally experienced measles, mumps, chicken pox, and German measles (rubella). I think the mumps hallucinations are my earliest memory and it is still an occasional nightmare where I wonder if it would be better to just die. Wishing these diseases on your children is child abuse, lifetime trauma, etc. But yeah, go ahead and let your child have a temperature of 105 and hallucinations about big green monsters shooting red arrows through the big hole in Mommy's head. Or die of one of these diseases. While you are worried about whether there are GMOs in the Little League snacks.

I had it all, too, and measles followed by Reye's syndrome would have taken me from life if mother had not been a nursing aide during WWII. She knew what a slush bath was (so do you if you've seen Jacob's Ladder) and used it to bring down my core temperature. When the doctor arrived, hatless (men wore hats; docs made house calls) he had snow on his crew cut. It looked like diamonds. I said to my mother, "Look! The Snow Prince has come to take me away," and she was certain I was going to die. I didn't. Thanks, mom.

Yes, abbyinsm, it's child abuse.

Why has Ladapo gone this long without facing one or more lawsuits about his incompetence and its danger to the citizenry? Are there no national organizations in the arena of public health who could take that on?

Yes, this is really strange to me. Where are the professional medical organizations? Between this guy and Ronny Jackson, the medical profession is looking *extremely* lax.

Do the citizens of Florida agree with all the deSantis et al BS or are they watching appalled like a lot of the rest of the country? I guess they elected him with a pretty wide margin but has he gone crazy with power since then?

Orlando Sentinel editorial board unambiguously calls out Ladapo every time he announces some new superstitions. There've been a couple of Letters to the Editor recently, too. Although we have MAGA trucks wandering about and a house on the way to the pool that sported Vivek, then DeSantis signs (no signs now), my parts of Orlando seem to be a nice island of deep blue in our goofy red state. My congressperson, and both of my state legislators are terrific. Every time a restaurant server here asks if they can get me something else, I request a new governor and a couple new senators. Our Attorney General is no treat, either, but I don’t want to run the server off with the complete list.

I am waiting for Polio to make a grand entrance and when their kids start to lose the use of their limbs, I can see them suing the government for not informing them of the risks of NOT being vaccinated.

My personal favourite was when one anti vaxxer said that, if vaccines AKCHEWALLY worked, people would be lining up around the block to take them.

Cue them being bombarded with photos of people lining up around SEVERAL blocks for smallpox, polio, measles etc. vaccinations.

This is why people need education in the humanities. Profiund ignorance of history leads to very, very bad choices.

Ha! There was a line when we got all of our vaccines and boosters except for once. Otherwise we got to say hi to nice people who all shared the same goal. And good sense!

We were in the second group to get shot (Over 65), and that was an amazing experience. Set up in a huge room with a lot of stations, they moved you through fast. Music playing to encourage people to move their arms while they did their fifteen minutes, and everyone in the place cheered when they announced No. 100.

These people had spent a year watching people die, and they were finally able to do something to fight back against it. It felt like we'd finally turned a corner.

What an amazing story. I know we felt jubilant and like we were doing something important when they opened up the vaccinations for aged 60 and under. And we thanked our Drs so sincerely because at that time they were so overworked and abused. It somehow felt sweet.

It would be such a satisfying way for those RWNJ Boomers who are still pissed off about all that New Deal So-Shul-ism to really stick it to FDR's memory.

Trump and his family are fully vaccinated with full healthcare services available 24/7. What does he care if disease is spread around our nation's schools....this is an especially ripe election talking point and Trump needs to be elected in 2024 to stay out of prison.

Expand full comment
LP's avatar

That's the thing. He's fully vaccinated, and so, I'd bet, are the rest of the MAGAs. It's a grift, and these sociopaths don't care how many die for it (they showed their asses on this in 2020).

Tosca's avatar

That's something I have to keep reminding myself...that these people wilfully risking their and their children's lives and health, aren't even guaranteed healthcare. That they'd receive a fucking BILL for the hospitalization, rehab and ongoing disability care. When they could just...sign up for a bunch of safe, relatively painless vaccines, and avoid all that entirely.

But no, "natural immunity" is more important. Ugh.
