With some $5 billion in federal help from the two stimulus packages, plus its own budget surplus, California is doing everything it can to keep people from becoming homeless, because that's far more efficient than trying to get them back into housing once they lose a roof over their heads. Plus, it's more humane, if you're into the crazy idea that government should actually work to improve people's lives.

but what about mah work efx?

I remember when Bill Clinton's nice post-presidential office suite in NYC was the subject of much outrage and clucking-of-toungues. As far as I know, he let his SS detail use the bathrooms, though, when they needed to. As always, IOKIYAR.

You are not alone!

I kept meaning to post something about "getter" being a real word, too, and now I think I've lost my chance.

Not so fast:

Recent DNA analysis indicates that giant pandas are more closely related to bears and red pandas are more closely related to raccoons. Accordingly, giant pandas are categorized in the bear family while red pandas are the only members of their family, Ailuridae.https://www.fws.gov/interna...

I understand that a large number of landlords are of the "mom and pop" varitey - people who purchased one or two homes to rent out (or a two-family home, where they live in one place and rent out the other (like the one I was raised in - as the tenant)) as an investment and source of regular income. These landlords are getting screwed with the eviction moratorium; they've come to rely on that income....

Another cliff hits in September, when Federal UI money runs out and people who have exhausted their state UI coverage start digging for coins lost in the couch. That will not be pretty, and, if it’s not pretty, the economy grows concerned. Like, oh hey, three million people owe money they don’t have and can’t buy stuff?

Ruh-roh. Look at that graph line descend….

Time for layoffs!

I'd bet alot of that money just sits there. NY tried to get rent relief out earlier in the pandemic and it ended up not being able to give out very much. It doesn't cover those who live on the edges. In NYC many work off the books(tough to prove you lost income) or do not have direct leases, they sublet or live as a roommate. Because of how expensive and hard it is to get a lease, I would guess there is a huge amount of people who won't be able to get help. The roommate issue is a particular problem in a place like NYC because of how expensive it is many, many people live this way. Losing a roommate might not be an acceptable reason for loss of income. Some landlords might actually prefer to evict people, if it's rent stabilized they haven't gotten an increase in 2 years but if they kick someone out they can increase the rent by 20% for a new tenant. Maybe instead of making tenants jump through hoops they might not be able to jump through just have the landlords apply directly. It can be limited to a certain level. I don't know but just saying here's the money you figure it out, maybe if you jump high enough you can have some of it, too bad if you don't have all the paperwork we require.
