I read an article by a woman who was part of the diplomatic/government circles in DC, who told of being at a party where she was asked what her about-to-graduate-from-college son had planned. Polite chatter, which came to a screeching halt when she said he was going to be an officer in the military. People were shocked. They not only had no children in the military--none of them KNEW anyone who had children in the military. And yet, these are the ones who are are the helm when it comes to decisions that affect the people who are in the military. I can tell you from a parent's perspective that we don't keep the best and send the rest.
