Why I love doing childcare as a profession, no matter the low pay and odd hours. Moments like this from today: Sweetest thing ever with my kid(the 6 year old I babysit.)

We are leaving the subway headed towards his home and he asks me, big smile on his face, "do you have fun taking me home?"

I said said yes, very much. He replied, "I have fun, it's one of my favorite things."

Awww 🥰

I’m making pommes boulangère (https://www.jamesbeard.org/recipes/potatoes-boulangere) for the big holiday meal this year (which day is still pending because my dopey husband hadn’t yet confirmed with his invited friend what day she is coming), so I’m making some from-scratch beef stock with which to cook the potatoes. Yesterday was the bone roasting and simmering, but I ran out of energy for the straining, so I chucked (har) the whole pot into the fridge to finish that off today. Took the fat off today and am gently simmering the whole thing now. Oh my, the layer of beefy gelatin on the surface is glorious. I think done will have to go in a stew for tonight’s dinner. I’m feeling pretty fancy, lemme tellya (which is pretty amusing, because the history of the dish is common-folk food).
