Mom: I'll be making the onerous 20 min drive to your house with your sister as chauffeur. ETA is 6 pm. Dinner should be on the table no later than 615 as I want to eat, receive my gifts with no appreciation and head home muttering about how little you all do for me by 715.

Me: no you won't. I'll drop something off on Saturday when I'm passing by your area. Start muttering now.

It's okay. I've done all the bawling I needed to do. Now I just wait here.

The death of the "mommy blogger" Heather Armstrong and the Lori Vallow Daybell trial sent me down a Mormonism rabbit hole. I guess it's Mormon week, just as a few months ago, between the Brasilia coup and George Santos, it seemed to be Brazil week.

Here is an interview by John Dehlin (who was excommunicated because he wanted the LDS church to be nicer to LGBTQ people, among other things) of Mark Naugle, an attorney and ex-Mormon who helps Mormons who want to quit the LDS Church. It's long - two hours - but Dehlin and Naugle are even keeled, reasonable persons, which makes what they are saying all the more effective:

It's stupid for the LDS Church and Kirton McConkie to play these nickel and dime games with people who want to quit. Let people quit as easily as possible, and then if they change their minds, make it easy to rejoin. Trickiness is what creepy cults do.

I also came across the CES Letter - a comprehensive review of the problems with Mormonism. I had never heard of A J Hill before, the Australian who says he is Jesus - I'd love to hear his first person reminiscences of the Roman Empire:

I also knew that Mormonism had a long history of official doctrinal racism, but I didn't know the exact date it stopped - the date was 1978.

"We prayed for God's mercy and he put off all of his planned slayings."

Alternative: "God's ways are mysterious and we shouldn't question him changing his mind."

Every couple of months, I get a letter, handwritten in lovely cursive from a JW. It always has the same return address and it politely attempts to sway me to the charms of Jehovah. I guess this was something they came up with during COVID b/c they couldn't go door to door. Or it could just be targeted at this particular part of Dayton b/c there is a strict anti-soliciting ordinance, rich white folks don't like being accosted at their front door.

Wonkers have remarkably high patience when it comes to cat pictures.

I grew up in the States (our weird system) and Brazil (metric), so you'd think I'd learn both.Wrong. Can't visualize any kind of measurements. Thank god that didn't happen with languages.
